Draggingtree
The American Conservative: Obama Bombs Blind Why Americans are still in the dark over the 9/11 Commission's view of the Saudis.By SCOTT MCCONNELL • September 24, 2014 By bombing ISIS units in Syria, the United States has turned a new page in its long-running conflict with the Arab world. I share the pessimism of those who predict the bombing won’t work, in which case this president or the next will come under intense pressure to commit ground troops in order to avoid a humiliating defeat. American allies in the region, who might be expected to contribute ground troops to the fight, have all refused—though jet planes from “several Arab allies” did strike targets in Syria. Presumably that’s an improvement over the Iraq invasion: the regional disdain for “Operation Iraqi Freedom” was perhaps best captured in a priceless scene from Oliver Stone’s “W.”, in which the Condoleeza Rice character tells the President that Morocco has promised to contribute thousands of monkeys to aid the American war effort. Draggingtree
The Long War ContinuesJon Gabriel, Ed. September 23, 2014 at 5:17 pm Time magazine, Sept. 25, 2001: Wars are easy to start. But they can be difficult to sustain. George W. Bush understands this, and so has been furiously managing expectations, pressing the case with almost everyone he talks to that this will be a long war against terrorism. …He wanted his generals to hear the same message he was delivering to Americans. “This will be a long campaign,” he told the senior officers in the room, “and the people in uniform are very important to it.” …”We have to be resolute,” he told the senators gravely. “If after the World Series, America forgets our mission and our duty, we’ll lose.” George W. Bush in USA Today, Sept. 8, 2002: http://ricochet.com/long-war-continues/
