Geee
American Spectator: Just as the American international security establishment — DoD, CIA, State — maintains continuing assessments of nations considered potential or actual adversaries, these countries do the same in respect to the United States. The DPRK (North Korea) openly states it believes the U.S. intends to invade it. The Kim dynasty has sought to instill a general paranoia within the nation, with a particular onus on a perpetually aggressive United States aided by its ambitious puppet in the southern portion of the peninsula, the Republic of Korea. It’s hard for Washington to accept, but North Korea really does believe it must remain on constant alert to possible U.S.-supported attack, and as a result must develop advanced nuclear capable missiles. As long as paranoia drives the DPRK strategic policy, it cannot be expected that it can be negotiated out of its nuclear weapon development program. What’s more; it really wants nuclear weapons, if for nothing else than status in the Asia community.
Valin
@Geee Re: China They have the potential to be a world "super power" (emphasis on the word potential). This is not an easy row to hoe, as some on our side seem to assume. They have domestic problems,...horrible infrastructure (roads), a growing and restive middle class, a restive country side...how you gonna keep down on the farm after they've seen Shanghai? They need to create millions of new (well paying?) jobs every year just to stay even with population growth. It is one thing to buy some aircraft carriers, it is an entirely different thing to know how to use them. Also When China says they feel hemmed in by America, looking at it from their POV, they are. ROK, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, VietNam, all allies of or friendly to America, and all concerned by the rise of China. Re: Russia Think pre WWI Russian empire +, because that is what Putin wants. In his and I believe the leadership of Russian Slavic Europe belongs to them, it is in their sphere of influence. They believe they need to control "Eastern Europe" to protect The Motherland from Germany and France. Looking south they see Iran spreading their revolutionary ideas into the Stans, and they have Oil, and access to warm water ports. Bringing Iran into their sphere of influence would also give them a say on what the Saudis do (think trouble in the Stans once again). Turkey they have always viewed as an enemy for religious reasons and the Turks once ruled over the Slavs in the Balkans. In addition there is that whole warm water port thing again. This is a very interesting dynamic going on in this area, as both Turkey and Iran want to be the dominate power in the Levant. This is what is really going on with Syria. Assad falls Turkey gets some major MoJo, for defeating Russia (they also view Russia has an enemy) and Iran. Iran from their view are evil heretics being Shias, and being Persian. The Assads fall Turkey can claim to be the Defenders of the true faith and the Arab homeland. If you are an Israeli, there is no good outcome from this. Which means if they can make a deal with Jordan Egypt the Saudis, they will strike into Syria to give themselves some defence in depth. Re: Caribbean and Central America Who really cares. It's out lake/area and there is not anything anyone can do about it. Anytime we really want to, there's a new (and very friendly) government in any of these countries. The only reason we haven't so far is its not really worth the bother. As always I reserve my God Given Constitutional Right to be wrong.
