JD Vance, following debate, cites sources for immigration-related housing costs

Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, followed through on his promise to cite the source of a claim he made about immigration driving up U.S. housing costs during the CBS News Vice Presidential Debate on Tuesday night.

In the showdown with fellow vice presidential hopeful Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Vance blamed Vice President Kamala Harris' border policies for allowing "25 million illegal aliens" into the U.S. during her tenure in the Biden-Harris administration, saying the surge of migrants has contributed to higher housing prices.

"Competing with Americans for scarce homes is one of the most significant drivers of home prices in the country," Vance said. "It's why we have massive increases in home prices that have happened right alongside massive increases in illegal aliens, alien populations under Kamala Harris' leadership."

A moderator then asked Vance to cite the source of his claim, saying, "Senator, on that point, I'd like for you to clarify there are many contributing factors to high housing costs. What evidence do you have that migrants are part of this problem?"

"Well, there's a Federal Reserve study that we're happy to share after the debate," Vance said. "We'll put it up on social media, actually, that really drills down on the connection between increased levels of migration, especially illegal immigration and higher housing prices."

Following the debate, Vance posted on X, "As promised earlier tonight, here is Michelle Bowman of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors: ‘Given the current low inventory of affordable housing, the inflow of new immigrants to some geographic areas could result in upward pressure on rents.’":snip:

How 2,000 Haitian migrants changed Rust Belt town of Charleroi, Pennsylvania

Charleroi, Pennsylvania, is a deeply troubled place. The former steel town, built along a stretch of the Monongahela River, south of Pittsburgh, has experienced the typical Rust Belt rise and fall. The industrial economy, which had turned it into something resembling a company town, hollowed out after the Second World War. Some residents fled; others succumbed to vices. The steel mills disappeared. Two drug-abuse treatment centers have since opened their doors.

The town’s population had steadily declined since the middle of the twentieth century, with the most recent Census reporting slightly more than 4,000 residents.

Then, suddenly, things changed. Local officials estimate that approximately 2,000 predominantly Haitian migrants have moved in.:snip:

'I'm Not Doing This S—t Again': Border Patrol Agents Warn of Mass 'Exodus' if Harris Wins Election

Border Patrol agents threatened to stage a mass "exodus" from the agency if Kamala Harris wins the White House in November, saying they won't stick around for another "four years of hell."

"I’m not doing this s—t again … four years of hell," one agent told the New York Post.

"Lots of guys who can retire will go. If Trump wins, they’ll stay," another agent added.

Harris, who has been President Joe Biden’s point person on immigration, has been largely criticized for her handling of the southern border, as more than 10 million illegal immigrants have come into the country under her watch. Border Patrol agents—who talked to the Post anonymously for fear of backlash from their bosses—expressed frustration with the Biden-Harris administration's open-border policies that have let known criminals enter the country.

"Under this administration, they’ve done everything they could to make our job as inefficient as possible. They can’t outwardly tell us not to do our job, but when you’re watching criminals come in and get released, it sucks," one agent said.

Three illegal immigrants from Honduras were arrested in Florida on Friday and charged with multiple counts of sexual assault of a minor under 12 years of age, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday.

The three immigrants allegedly illegally entered the country during the Biden-Harris administration, with two of the men entering the country through the Southern border in 2021, and the third in 2023. "[The men] were arrested for numerous counts of Lewd Lascivious Behavior (Capital Sexual Battery) on a minor under 12 years of age," the sheriff's office wrote in a Facebook post. "It is believed this despicable behavior took place between August 2024 to the present."
