They're eating the dogs': How a small Ohio city became the epicenter of immigration debate

A quiet Midwestern community has become the latest battleground over immigration after Republicans leveled unfounded claims that Haitians were kidnapping and eating neighbors’ pets.

The city of Springfield, Ohio, had roughly 60,000 residents as of 2022. In the two years since then, thousands of migrants have arrived, mostly from Haiti. Although some have welcomed the new neighbors, others have lamented the change and said it has taken a toll on city resources.:snip:

Mexican government buses migrants to US border as illegal immigration becomes top election issue

The Mexican government has started busing migrants to the U.S. border if they have appointments under a controversial use of a phone app implemented by the Biden administration that allows migrants to be paroled into the U.S.

The Mexican National Institute of Migration posted the video of what it said was the first bus transporting "foreigners" from Tapachula in the south of the country near Guatemala, to Reynosa near the U.S. border. It said that migrants will attend their appointments scheduled via the CBP One app. It is part of an "Emerging Safe Mobility Corridor" launched by the Mexican government last month.

The CBP One app was expanded during the Biden administration to allow up to 1,450 migrants per day to schedule an appointment at a U.S. port of entry to be paroled into the U.S. if they meet certain conditions. The app also allows them to upload documents ahead of that appointment:snip:

White House More Involved in Housing NYC Migrants Than Previously Known: Congressional Investigation

White House officials were more involved in a disastrous plan to house thousands of migrants at an encampment located on federal land in New York City than was previously known, congressional investigators revealed on Thursday.

According to the House Natural Resources Committee leaders, it was the White House that spearheaded the administration's decision last year to hand large portions of the Gateway National Recreation Area's Floyd Bennett Field to local officials for the purpose of migrant housing. Since that decision, however, the White House has publicly, and in communications with the committee, skirted responsibility.:snip:

Illegal migrant from Dominican Republic suspected of ‘horrifically’ killing New York family of four

An illegal migrant wanted for murder in the Dominican Republic is accused of “horrifically” killing a family of four in upstate New York last month as firefighters made the gruesome discovery during a house call.

Julio Cesar Pimentel-Soriano, 34, allegedly used a “sharp object” to fatally stab Fraime Ubaldo, 30, Marangely Moreno-Santiago, 26, Evangeline Ubaldo-Moreno, 4, and Sebastian Ubaldo-Moreno, 2, inside their Irondequoit home on Aug. 31, according to a felony complaint viewed by WHAM.

He allegedly stabbed each victim in the neck and chest multiple times.

“Obviously, the allegations are troubling,” Assistant District Attorney Perry Duckles told the outlet. “They are difficult to deal with. They are difficult to see.”:snip:

Border Patrol officials: Violent criminals being released into US aren’t being vette

(The Center Square) – Border Patrol officials say foreign nationals who illegally cross the border aren’t being vetted prior to being released into the country.

At a press conference in Houston Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Texas’ plan to target and arrest members of a violent Venezuelan prison gang, Tren De Aragua, who illegally entered the country. “I will not allow them to use Texas as a base of operations to terrorize our citizens,” he said.

Joining Abbott was National Border Patrol Council Vice President Chris Cabrera, who said, “As a federal agent, we have no way of vetting these people other than the honor system. If they tell us they're from so and so and this is their name and we can't check against Venezuela's database, that they're not going to give us access to it, so we have to let them go,” he said, referring to releasing them into the U.S. “Unfortunately, we do let them go.”

When it comes to processing people for removal, he said, “In the off chance, we're going to deport them, Venezuela won’t take them back.” Instead of requiring them to, as was the case in the Trump administration, he said, “Our government on the federal level is kind of weak-minded. We just go ahead and say, ‘OK, well, you know, go ahead and stay here.’”

The level of violence Americans are experiencing at the hands of criminal Venezuelans is “an infestation,” he said. “It's taking hold not just in Colorado or New York, but in Michigan, Florida, Texas, you name it.:snip:

Fed-up Denver suburbs are looking to sue their big sanctuary city neighbor and the state government after suffering strained budgets and crime after 42,000 migrants flocked to Colorado — bringing the violent gang Tren de Aragua with them.

Most recently, the council for the city of Castle Rock – just south of Denver – unanimously voted to research legal options against its largest neighbor, CBS News Colorado reported.

The vote came amid a wave of other suburbs that have voted to sue, or to look into suing over the migrant crisis in Colorado.:snip:
