The United Nations is a mess, but it is predictable. So when the Taliban conquered Afghanistan and plunged the country into starvation in the process, it was apparent that the U.N. would eventually recognize the Taliban as the official government of the country. That process has now begun.

The U.N. Security Council voted to establish ties with the Taliban while extending the mandate of the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. According to the U.N.’s news website, the UNAMA extension calls on “Afghan political actors and stakeholders” to coordinate with the mission, adding that the UNAMA will “engage with all Afghan actors, including the Taliban.”

The Taliban haven’t changed or reformed. They are the same thugs that work hand in hand with terrorists (including in their government Cabinet). The Taliban have been trying to figure out how to get their hands on the billions of dollars of aid flowing into the country. The U.N. is allowing them to get their foot in the door now.

It won’t be a surprise if sometime over the next few years the U.N. decides to recognize the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan. This is a body that panders to China and Russia and places human rights abusers on its human rights council, after all. The U.N. has taken its first step in that direction, and it’s not hard to guess where this road ends.
